You read all the success books. Work those moonlight hours. Up at the crack of dawn, going, going, going, gone. (Hey that rhymed!). So you’re well in tune with what you think drives your success. And perhaps you’re also well aware that your HEALTH is the number one thing! But you’re always game to learn something more. You’re open to the idea that you don’t know it all, and when a holistic health and wellness expert speaks, you’re willing to listen!
That’s why this week, as the marketing agency that provides social media, email marketing, web development and design, SEO, and ad strategies on platforms like Google, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn to holistic wellness and beauty experts, we decided to feature the one and only Dr. Cristina Strahotin, as she shared 5 key ways to support the number one driver of your success: your health.
But first, who is Dr. Cristina, and why should you read on to what she has to say?
Cristina Strahotin, MD, is a triple board-certified internist, gastroenterologist, and transplant hepatologist. “Oh boy, that is a mouthful,” Dr. Strahotin jokes. “And yes, lots of years of training. And guess what? I am still training every single day because I realized that what I learned over those many long years is only one side of the coin.” Through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, personal reading, and association with holistic cutting-edge brands, Dr. Strahotin shared she learned the other side of the coin, the one I am living in my day-to-day life.
“I, like you, want to see a provider who sees me and hears me for whatever my beliefs and thoughts are, who is trying to work with me rather than give me a script, who is trying other methods before I am given a list of pills that could interact amongst each other and give me side effects that need another pill or leave me feeling worse than when I started.”
Dr. Strahotin grew up in Romania, a small Eastern European communist country at that time, in a home where pretty much everything that ended up on the table was homegrown, where there was a lot of manual labor, but good wholesome physical activity and nutrition. “Nothing packaged,” Dr. Strahotin added, “To say that I had my first Pepsi when I was 13-14 and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread…pretty much says it all. At first, I was delighted by the Western ease, only to realize that it came with a huge cost. The health cost!
Now trying to return to my own roots as much as I can, without compromising health while smartly utilizing the novelties of an industrialized world, and sharing this with clients like you.”
So yeah, she knows a thing or two about a thing or two when it comes to your holistic health and wellness, and what are the 5 tips she has to offer? Keep reading to find out!
First to address is your mindset: Dr. Cristina invites you to first explore the WHY behind whether you want to get healthy or not and to support that inquisitive journey by arming yourself with regular motivational reading like book titles she recommends such as Atomic Habits by James Clear, and The Slight Edge: Turning Simple Disciplines into Massive Success and Happiness by Jeff Olson.
Your sleep is so important: Experts like Dr. Cristina recommend getting to bed at a set time each night, and to create yourself a designated sleep schedule, planning to get to bed before 10 pm each night, and getting at least 7 hours of sleep a night though 8 is even better.
You are what you eat: You could exercise and sleep well, but if the food you put in your body is adding toxins, or inflammation to your system, you aren’t going to feel energized throughout your day. And if you don’t feel energized, you’re not going to want to do what you need to do to get healthy or to be successful or productive.
While some experts may say to start small and taper into that new healthy diet, Dr. Cristina believes that when you’re ready to commit to a new diet, it’s time for an overhaul but created in a way that you’ll be able to stick to it.
How to keep at it: Dr. Cristina makes the point that it’s not helpful to you to wait until you feel motivated or inspired to get moving or start eating better. It is quite likely that you’re going to feel like it every single day. But once you get moving, or once you start your day on a healthier note, it’ll kick start you to feeling more energized like you can keep going. It’s up to you to stay consistent even on the days when you don’t feel like it and creating the routine will help you stay on track.
“You could be well intended but if you don’t apply any action to achieve your goals…nothing will change. Good health is a two-way street: involves reflection, routine assessment of what works, and troubleshooting of what does not work,” Dr. Cristina says.
What you may have not thought about exercise: Speaking of motivation (a very fickle feeling) and consistency, Dr. Cristina shared in a recent post that during those times of the year when you may feel likely doing nothing because it’s too cold, you are not harvesting the benefits of low temperatures. It is known that cold water immersion mainly, but also just being in cold temperatures and shivering, leads to something called fat browning – essentially turning your bad fat into good fat. So keep that in mind when you’re finding yourself wanting to stay in bed and cozy up under the blankets. You could be very well ramping up your health by getting out there on that hike with your pup this time of year!
